Project Management In The Office… And At Home?
Posted by Dana Larson
It’s no secret that the lines between your work life and your home life blur on a regular basis. There are some people that want to keep work and personal information as separate as possible. And while that might work well for some, it’s not all that likely in these days of trying to get more done in less time.
So why even try to separate your two lives at all? There are ways to manage your work projects and your home projects together to reduce stress across all areas of your life. Here are a few tips for doing just that.
Project Manage Life’s Big Events
Just because you use your project management skills to plan and execute major business projects doesn’t mean you can’t utilize those skillsets at home. Imagine the big events in life, such as a wedding or a surprise 50th birthday party, are just the next projects that need to be managed. Break them out into their critical parts, delegate tasks to the appropriate people on your team and give tasks deadlines. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to roll your work-based project management skills into your home-based event planning needs.
Schedule Your Home Work, Too
So you love detailed task management and scheduling your work in the office, and you enjoy the feeling of checking items off your to-do list. Utilize the same project and task management software that you use in your office to help you plan to-do lists at home. Give yourself tasks to do a little Spring cleaning, to go to the grocery store or to remember to pay your bills every month. Managing your home tasks in the same format as your work tasks is familiar, and knowing what you have to do at home can lead to less stress when trying to remember and manage it all.
Improve Home Communications
Because of your project management training, you know how to communicate with others and work with them to get the project completed. These communication skills help in home conversations as well. Rather than heated arguments, you can have objective, productive discussions and arrive at conclusions together, complete with action items and a positive outcome.
When your project management skills and project management systems can help manage parts of your home life, don’t shy away from using tactics that come naturally to you. Manage all information together in one place, and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to stay organized is all areas of your life.
