Project Management PM Disaster Recovery on a Smartphone Published on 06 October 2010 - Revised on I am probably lagging behind many of you in the smartphone department. Mainly because I primarily work from home and I'm well connected there. Plus I have a MacBook and netbook available and I hate upgrading my phone when I'm doing fine with my old one. Don't get me wrong, I've had Blackberries and Treos before, but it's been a couple of years. But Best Buy was doing a new Free Phone Friday promotion and they even pay the tax so I just couldn't pass up the upgrade opportunity. I now have a Samsung Fascinate - it's very similar to a Droid - and it is great. So I thought it might be good to try to compose AND post an article from my new phone to simulate a situation I was in a couple of years ago running a project for a major airline. My laptop was broken in transit to the onsite working session with my team and the customer and there was no backup machine available. I ended up sharing with one of my team members but that was an awkward mess. If I had a smartphone would I have been able to create a basic status report and take notes etc. while onsite and actually be productive? That is what I'm testing out with this article. I realize the situations aren't exactly the same but here I sit with only my phone and its 3G access so I'm seeing it as a decent test. I am creating the article entirely on the phone and I will also be posting it to the PM Tips site entirely on the phone. However you may have to forgive a typo or two. I wrote an article on an iPad the other day and that went well but creating this document on my smartphone has been easier. I certainly wouldn't want to make it a habit but in a difficult situation it can work.... at least in the very short term. So I'd like to hear some of your road horror stories. If you've been traveling for a project and your equipment has let you down in some please share here how you had to improvise to make the best of a difficult situation. I look forward to your comments. Note: Unfortunately, due to limitations beyond my control and beyond both my phone's and WordPress' capabilities (or my knowledge of WordPress), I was unable to completely publish this article from my phone. I ended up sending it via Bluetooth to my Macbook and publishing it from there. If anyone knows a way around this, please let me know as I'd like to be able to accomplish this action laptop free if the issue comes up. Thanks - and I still look forward to your comments about facing difficulties while going mobile in the project management workplace.
