Increase Business Success with Project Management
Posted by Dana Larson
Let’s be honest – who doesn’t want to be successful? And while we all can define success in different ways, at least we have something to search for and something to measure ourselves against: “Am I as successful as I’d like to be?”
For a lot of people, that answer is “No”. But that doesn’t mean we are all incredible failures. All it means is that we are still working, and can always improve upon what we once thought of as “successful”.
In a business, the idea of success may be earning a million dollars in its first year, or finding just the right product developer that will take the product to the next level. Whatever you need to accomplish in order to see yourself as successful, there are a few key traits to attaining that success.
Likewise, the skillset of a project manager is one that can drive yourself and others toward that success. When you learn project management and leverage project management solutions, you are allowing yourself a helping hand along the path to greater business success.
So what are these traits that can increase business success? And how does effective project management fit in?
Reach For The Stars
It’s no surprise that individuals and businesses can be more successful when they have goals to shoot for. Set smaller goals, such as gaining 3 new customers in 1 week, and larger business goals, such as increasing revenue by 20% over last year. Use your project management skills to break down tasks that feed up to these goals and objectives. Break out the overall goal into smaller, more attainable goals and projects, and keep everyone on track toward the greater objective. This type of organization will help immensely when working toward increased success.
Plan For “Down The Road”
Along with giving yourself goals to shoot for, make sure you have larger plans in place. These plans could be anything from increasing the sales team by 50% to being sold to a larger company for a profit. Whatever the plans are, make sure you are organizing your business in a way that follows those plans. Also ensure that you are planning your projects out as far as you possibly can. This way, the ideas behind your long-term business plans won’t get lost in the day-to-day tasks of running your business.
Create The Right Team
Just as a sports team gathers the best players, you need to pull together the right team to increase your business success. Make sure they share your vision and dedication, and that they have the skills to bring your business to the next level. Also, don’t forget to test and, if possible, improve upon their project management skills. If they need a bit of help in the planning and organization department, find the right tools to enhance project management for your team or enroll them in project management courses. The skills they learn will be invaluable to your company.
Attitude Is Everything!
Sometimes the best driving factor for success is having the right attitude. Think positively, and amazing things can happen. Surround yourself with positive people as well – and make sure you communicate! Communication and collaboration on tasks and projects can significantly impact the dedication each team member has to the business, and increases trust among team members to keep them in high spirits. Find a project management system that allows for this type of collaboration, and take an extra management communication class to increase your communication success.
Roll Up Your Sleeves
Don’t be afraid to get down and dirty. Everything worth having is worth working hard for.
Because you have set goals and your business plans are in place, you have nothing to do but buckle down and get to work toward achieving those goals. Utilize your project management skills here to drive you toward achieving your goals and managing your tasks and the tasks of your team.
Have Fun!
Just because you have business objectives to reach doesn’t mean you can’t have fun as well. Inject a little fun into your day at the office by sharing a delicious treat with your coworkers or going for a walk on your lunch break. And make sure you plan a vacation every now and then to recharge your batteries. If you need to use a project management system to help you plan for these little breaks, go for it. Integrating your business task plan with your personal task plan can help keep everything on track – including the fun!
Behind every great success is a great plan moving it forward. Utilizing project management training, skills and systems can help keep you and your business on track toward reaching your goals. Make sure you plan, stay positive, work hard and have fun to get the most out of your project management skills and your business.

Hi Dana. I agree, if you don’t plan for success, you won’t get it. You do need to know what you are aiming for, so setting success criteria is important.

Creation of steps to achieve success is a good thought. I appriciate all the steps in entire post in the sense that they are realistic and easy to follow. Only thing which I would like to point out is that each plan should have a back up as in real case there are many thing comes to the way unexpectedly and we find ourselves not prepared for such cases.
