So it’s hard to make time to consult more widely. But you should. Getting the right people involved in the project at the very beginning can make it a lot easier to get off on the right foot. The more you spend time with the right people, the easier it will be to put together a schedule and set expectations that are realistic.

One of the main jobs of a project manager is to track how the work is going. Not only in terms of quality of deliverable but also more practically: are you getting through the work as planned? Are you hitting all the right dates and moving through the project in a careful and considered manner, with a plan to avoid a massive burden to get everything done at the last minute?
PMI has released a new Pulse of the Profession® report specifically about benefits identification. There is a lot of interesting stuff in the report including these headlines from their research:
·When benefits are identified before the start of a project, 56% more projects meet or exceed forecasted ROI.
·38% of respondents said that project managers are responsible for the identification of benefits.
·Only 20% of steering committees take accountability for making sure benefits align to strategic objectives.
